A holding game is a position where one side has escaped all their back checkers to the midpoint or beyond, while the other side still has some sort of advanced anchor like the 5-point or bar-point. One side is trying to bring their men home safely, while the side playing the holding game is waiting to hit a last-minute shot or throw some miracle doubles to win the race. These positions arise more frequently than any other sort of position, so understanding the cube action is critically important to becoming a top player. I’ll show you how to evaluate these positions in terms of the race and the structure, so you’ll know how big a racing edge you need to double, and how far behind you can be and still have a take.
