Replying to the Opening Roll: In this episode, well look at how to play when your opponent has won the opening roll and made a play. Unlike the case with the opening roll, there are not a lot of toss-up cases or easy plays here. Whatever your opponent did has altered the game in some way and created some specific threats. You have to respond appropriately. In short, you have to play some backgammon! Well consider the strength of hitting blots, what to do when you roll a double, how to respond when your opponent makes a strong inner point, and how to decide between building and splitting. After this lesson, you should have a pretty good idea of how to plan your opening strategy.
