I know that there was a little known favorite song thread, but I think this is more appropriate for general music interests.
I recently discovered King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King

I love King Crimson, but Rush will always be at the very top of my prog rock list.

If someone was to first get exposed to Rush, what song would you suggest he listens to?
I listened to a lot more of King Crimson and its not as perfect as their first few albums. Epitaph and In the court of the crimson king are just mind blowing.

Well Rush has eras in their music where they are quite different. 1974-1979 the long, concept songs rule the albums. The one song that is probably most representative of that era is the title track of 2112.
From 1980-1983 they really start to really mesh as a songwriting unit. Tom Sawyer is the classic song of this era and most people think of this song when they think of Rush.
1984-1988 you had the era of keyboards, synths, and electronic percussion which really took them into a different direction from their earlier material. Big Money is probably the song to listen to for this era.
1989-1991 they got back to being more of a power rock three piece, but the songs were thinner and not as heavy as earlier Rush. Roll the Bones is a good representation of that time period.
1993-1996 they started to get back to heavier songs and away from keyboards, synths and electronic percussion. Animate is a good song from this time.
1997-Present is what I feel some of the heaviest sounding material they have done since they have been playing. Their last couple of albums have really showcased what a kick ass hard rock trio they can be. To show this a great song is Secret Touch.
I have always gotten into a mood where I will enjoying listening to certain eras of the band for awhile, and then change to another. However if I was stuck on a desert island with only one album to listen to for the rest of my life, it would be their live album "Exit Stage Left." Doesn't get much better than that.
